Italy Part III Pisa

We had driven about 370 kms from Rome to Pisa.

our hotel in Pisa

A selphie taken in front of the mirror in our room.

Olive Tree.  I had never seen one in such close quarters.  I  used to think it was a Huge tree.  Like Wine Olive Oil is also famous in Tuscany area in Italy.

close up of tree olives can be seen in the tree.

We stayed in a place called Euro Hotel in Pisa.  Pisa is an hour's drive from Florence which Italians spell as Fiarenze.  I wonder how they pronounce it.  Rome is spelled as Roma.  We had break fast which was better than what we had in Rome. It is a funny how they serve BF to groups in Italian hotels.  A specific time is given to each group to enter the dining space and we were not allowed to go earlier .  We were  all ready by 7.45 a.m.,  but were not allowed to enter the dining hall till 8 a.m.

We started by 9 a.m. The Bus dropped us in a  big parking place in around 15 minutes.  We had to walk for more than 10 minutes to reach the leaning Tower.  But for this Leaning Tower nobody would visit which is a small city in Italy.

on the way to the Piazza.  Magic ??

The souvenir shops on the way to the Tower.

We walked through by lanes and came to a big compounded area .(looked like a compounded area).  It is a rectangular area which has  A Cathedral (known as Duomo in Italian),  A Baptistery,  A Bell Tower which is the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa.  Yes Leaning Tower   is a free standing Bell Tower. The area is called  as Piazza dei Miracoli.  (The Square of Miracles)

the three structures, the leaning tower is the last in the row

The Duomo

The Tower was marvelous.  It was not as big as I had imagined ( I mean in height).   I was not aware it was a marble structure.  In my mind I had pictured it as a red colour (brick?) tower in a very large area.
All the three structures are very nice and beautiful, but they can not compete with their much more world famous contemporaries, but for the leaning Tower which is a World Wonder.
It is a marvel how the Tower is standing in such a way.  People take pictures as if they are trying to straighten the tower which of course we also did.

                                                               Front side of  Duomo
I was happy I could see this before the Tower or myself vanish from this world.  No wonder this is called a world wonder and it is indeed one.
Now they allow people to go up the tower.  (of course we did not have time for all that luxury).
They have reinforced the Leaning Tower with heavy Metallic Ropes to the foundation so that the tower does not fall or lean further.

There is a Museum and also a Cemetery in this square.

There are lot of souvenir shops on the road sides leading to the Piazza.  Lots of tourist crowd was there.

                                                       The Base of the Tower

People on top of the Tower.  How I wish we were there.

THE BELL for which this Tower was built.

We started for Florence which is an hour's drive  and had lunch paid by us  on our way which was a small snack shop and  the lunch was very bad.
I only hoped that Florence would compensate for this lunch.
