We are in the Masai Game reserve which is one of the biggest reserve in Kenya the place to see the wild animals.
The safari we took is called Safari Trails. They have beautiful lodges in the middle of wild and it is being managed very efficiently.
The lodge where we stayed is called Keekoroh Lodge and we are served Indian food. Very aesthetically decorated place.
Government has given in lease to private operators to operate Safaris. The Govt gets money from these operators and they use that money to conserve the wild and also take action against poachers. So if more people come they can conserve better.
Even though it is the most expensive tours we have done so far, I feel this once in a life time visit is worth it and it is out of this world.
Today is 20th July 2014 Sunday. We all have Breakfast and get ready by 7.30 a.m.
Three vehicles start from our group . Five of us are in our vehicle. Immediately on exiting the lodge gates John takes us in a different direction. The morning weather is little chill and lovely and very pleasant.
Our Guide and Myself
First we see some Wild Buffaloes and lots of Wildebeest and Zebras. One can not imagine the numbers of these animals in groups. They are huge in numbers and they walk behind one another like in a procession. It is so funny to watch.
The queueing Zebras.
The Baboons are behaving exactly like the Monkeys we see in India.
We also see some Baboons and Gazelles.
Impala.
Grants Gazelle
Ah now we see lovely Giraffe. Four of them are there and the vehicle is stopped. It comes near the vehicle and keeps looking at us as if inspecting. It is such a feeling of excitement which can not be explained in words.
Our guide tells us what we saw was Masai Giraffe and there are two other varieties the Rotschild and Reticulated. (which we were fortunate to see the following days at different places).
Female Ostrich
Our John as usual keeps communication open with his friends and so we proceed to a place where there are Lions. We see a group of Lions, Two adult females and three cubs. They are under a bush. They get up and walk. There is a kill. they have hunted a Buffalo and are eating it. We can see the cubs eating small portions.
In these vast grasslands, there are small shrubs in which these Lions relax. I was under the impression there will be large trees.
Here even the Giraffe eat from smaller shrubs only. This place is called Masai Mara, Masai is the name of the tribes who live here. Mara means dots. The whole area is dotted with small round trees which look like dots from far.
We proceed further and come across some more Giraffes.
John tells us that if we want the vehicle to stop for taking pictures, to say 'Semama' which means stop in their language. (Of course he speaks very good English). Now on wards I can hear hubby dear shouting 'mama, mama ' (which means uncle in Tamil) I keep adding Se to it and shout Semama. John keeps explaining to us the different species and their habits etc. When we spot Giraffe there is a cry 'Semama' from all of us .
We spot some Gazelles. There are two varieties , Thompson Gazelle which are small and has a black stripe in the side of the body and bigger one called Grant Gazelles. Both are lovely to look at. We see some Topis and an Antelope variety called as Impala and also some antelopes which are called Elands.
We see some Vultures sitting and walking in an awkward way which are the scavengers of the wild along with the Hyenas.
We proceed to another place. (All roads are mud roads very rough and I wonder how our guide knows the direction.) Lo and Behold we see the king of the jungle the Male Lion. It is very majestic. Nearby there are some female Lions also.
Just a few yards away we see another Male Lion which is very finely camouflaged. The animals are so finely camouflaged, that we can not find it unless our guide points out to us. They can spot the animals so well. This Lion keeps walking towards our vehicle. I am scared. As usual I try seeing it with one eye , the other eye closed due to fear. haha. Mr. John asks us to be very quiet. It walks away and sits under another bush. Lions are very lazy and they always sleep, We are very lucky to see active Lions in the daytime.
We are to proceed to see the Migration . We see some Elephants on our way.
We were excited about the Migration.
